Web Camera for Remote Server Room
-
I would expect a camera that can read the screen from across the room to be not cheap.

Realistically speaking, $300 for a camera (of decent quality) is a deal. When you're looking at residential equipment you're essentially buying from the bargain bin.
Of which only the lowest quality crap is sold.

What about something like this?
I have a Foscam at home. They never put out patches and are hacked frequently. It's on it's own VLAN and you need a tunnel to see it. I would not purchase that unless you want to go through some work to secure it.

Why not just use OoBM?

Why not just use IPMI?
Actually being able to see with your eyes the condition of the room (or security of the room) is good to have.
In terms of status monitoring I'd agree using IPMI or iDrac or iLo.

Right but the specific request was for something so stupid.. Reading a screen? Seeing drive lights? just WTF.

True. . . i kind of glossed over that as a "would just like to be able to see the rooms status. . . " but reading the screen is odd.

"Isn't there some kind of stipulation in place that you can't just turn around and sell it?"

When I setup my old server room I just hooked a cheep webcam via USB to a old Windows Client computer I had laying around. I then installed some cheap software (Webcam Monitor I think) that would take a picture when ever someone walked in front of it, save it to a file share, then email me the pic as an attachment. I then pointed the camera at the door at face height, turned the lights off, and left it. I could RDP to the box to check in, and I had a email and photo log with time stamps of everyone that walked in.
