I'm still using the Mate desktop on mine.

Shouldn't, it needs a GPU. Stick with Mate, LXDE, XFCE, etc.

circling back around to this,... X2Go has been working great for me over the last nine or so months. Better since rebuilding my Win10 box.
I have a LM 17.1 running as the server to use for Pandora and just toying around with LM. But I always had a monitor on it so that I was able to sign in, and then connect using X2go.
Now, I've lost a monitor and after rebooting the LM17.1 box (using it as a UPS monitor), I no longer can access it as I was. I was able to sign in, but it used my local desktop sound, I don't want that.
I need to be able to use the remote PCs sound, as it's close enough to listen to, but not so that it interferes with my local SKYPE or phone sounds....
Thoughts?

So LM is the remote machine?

Yes, LM is the remote and 'X2go server'
-
So what has changed? X2Go client configuration?
-
I suppose the 'normal operation'.
Previously I had a keyboard/mouse/monitor on that computer. Now it is 'headless'. However I need to log in as local (console) so that I use that desktops sound/speakers.
If I use XFCE I use my local sound/speakers.

the Client side is running Windows 10 as the host application (have not gone back to install Linux yet). so am using the Windows X2Go client

How about making the LM box auto logon upon reboot. This will ensure desktop:0 is always running, then when you X2Go into it, you'll be a secondary connection, and your should should come from your desired location.

I suppose one could.
For the now, I'm using the dying monitor to sign in with. it'll work long enough to sign in before the video goes out on it.
