It is about 7 by car for me. But of course that doesn't take into account any traffic

Going to Europe is the killer. While it might be a bit less in the winter, summer 2012 cost me $1800 round trip. The hotels were also easily double what I normally pay in the US (or the same if I'm in SF or NYC).
Dominica needs to do some of the planning. For us $270 down to here wasn't a deal, it was splurging. We could have gotten a bit cheaper. I've gone to Europe (one way) for $135. Important things to do are avoid London like the plague, the taxes there alone make a flight really expensive.
I've heard about these fare deals, but they generally only exist from places like NYC or DC or Atlanta, and never include the cost of getting to those cities from elsewhere in the country.
Europe for cheap was from JFK or Logan. So yes. Cheap flights to Central America almost always originate in Houston or Mexico City.

Yes same here. The only place I can fly for under $250 is NYC 2 hours away (flight time at least).
You should be able to get to Vegas and some Caribbean destinations. Check JetBlue and Southwest.

Wait, I thought you were in the same state!?

Ever tried driving end to end across New York? That's a big state and Buffalo to NYC is from one point to the other and the road does an L rather than a straight line and traffic nearer to NYC gets slow.

Nope. I don't know what you mean by big. Geographically or population?
Driving to the border of my state takes about two days.

It takes more than 6 hours to drive across an average state in the USA. Places like California and Texas can easily be 4 or more times that.

NY is like ten hours or more if you actually go edge to edge, but we generally don't refer to the eastern portion for the challenge.

Geographically. Buffalo and NYC are like 500 miles apart and NY goes over a hundred miles farther east still after NYC.

Buffalo to NY is just a stupidly long drive, and not one I will be doing ever again.
I just made this trip last year (after returning from Michigan) it took almost 10 hours of non-stop driving. And that is in good conditions.

I made the Rochester to NYC trip a few times... it is a really easy drive until you get within 30-40 miles of NYC.

Can we separate this thread into two topics? One dedicated to conference name and location and the other dedicated to session material ideas?

@Minion-Queen Knows we tend to get sidetracked. Here is the session ideas thread. http://mangolassi.it/topic/6178/planning-mangocon

Already two topics, but seems like many would make sense. One for name, one for location, one for scheduling, one for general ideas, one for sessions topics, etc.

MangoCon should probably have it's own square on the homepage.

Whoops, they aren't squares anymore.. but you get my meaning.
I so rarely visit the homepage - I normally live through the new posts link.

It's own Circle. Oh, that sounds like a Google+ thing, that's not good.
-
I did start a Category (no pic yet cause well someone on my team needs to show me how to do that).

I guess, at this point, MangoCon it is!
