Hyper-V & XenServer backup & DR: single pane of glass
-
@FATeknollogee I'm guessing you are asking for alternative backup application to Quadrics. Right? What about Veeam? Don't think they support XenServer but I could be wrong.
-
Interested in finding out if anyone has used Alike
-
From the @QuadricSoftware twitter feed:
....Did you know Alike DR is the only solution that supports true replication for #XenServer? Try our 30-day free trial! ow.ly/XXCNbMaybe they haven't heard of @olivier

I hate when you go to a website and poke around and never manage to find out what the product even is. I finally got to a page that started to have a description instead of marketing buzz and it starting comparing itself to... itself. My guess is their product isn't valuable enough to they focus on the buzz, rather than the facts.

They don't and they have stated that they won't. They say things like "the market is too small", which is obviously totally an attempt at misdirection. The market is enormous. The market that they could penetrate is tiny because of built in, free backups solutions like XO and NAUBackup and the paid market has long been dominated by Unitrends. Veeam is in no position to compete. They rely on marketing, like VMware does, and high cost sales tactics to move in a different world that would not only fail in the higher tech Xen world, but would actually hurt them.
Their position in the VMware world is unparalleled, there is no reason for them to play in the Xen and KVM worlds where backups isn't an external component.

None of you XS gurus know anything about this company or it's products?

Never hear of it..

Any one with a Hyper-V + XS lab want to test the product & let us know?
Might be the greatest thing since sliced bread...

Not really
You can have a look at their tutorials though

What is interesting about it? What does it add that we are lacking?

That was supposed to be a "sarcasm" emoji.
I was interested because it services XS & Hyper-V (which is something you had suggested to the folks at XO)
I use Hyper-V now & I've been looking (albeit still on the fence) at XS. -

It does XS + HV but... what does it do? The advantage to XO is that it is a single pane of glass. So having it cover several bases is a big deal. Alike just does a subset of functionality, right?

Is it possible to have a system failover to another system with zero actual failure?
of course I know the answer is yes, we've seen this in video where a laptop is watching a video that's streaming from one VM and that VM is moved/failed over to another server and the video either never stops... or has a small kinda pause, but no actual failure.
-
Alike is also claiming single pane of glass, backup in one hypervisor - restore in another etc

Single pane of glass means all VM management, replication, capacity monitoring, failver, etc. Alike does that?

Um... yes?
LOL. What did you want me to answer there?

Don't know about failover, but the other stuff yes (per the website), remember, my experience with this product is zero.

Interesting.
