using letsencrypt right now on my home server, btw. Have a cron job set up to update the cert every month or so, with an easy tool: ACME. Simpler than the 'standard' tool from Lets Encrypt, if you ask me. Go check it out at https://github.com/hlandau/acme

Nextcloud Conference was fun, anyone here joined?
We had over 150 people at the Nextcloud conf
I wrote a blog about the event. One piece of news from the conference you might like: our iOS app is now fully free, not only in terms of freedom but also costs.
Friday was our enterprise day, you can watch the talks about things like our Red Hat partnership, the 22K user TU Berlin migration, security, scalability and online office improvements and our outlook integration on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL4eBKdNy6FCHkFwlhUr6JORClr0-bUapV&v=NCo23LS3Yj4
In the weekend we had keynotes each morning (Tristan Nitot, co-founder of Mozilla Europe Saturday, Sunday Moodle founder Martin Dougiamas) followed by a dozen+ lightning talks and workshops in the afternoon.
Maybe see you next year then? The dates are already fixed: August 23-30!

RE: HUGE news: Nextcloud future of ownCloud!
Guys, good discussion. I don't want to comment on the ownCloud side of things, that's up to them.
If you have questions about us, our goals, our roadmap - yes, watch the video of the hangout Frank and myself did, that's a good one. And on https://nextcloud.com/news are blogs apearing from our employees who share their ideas - ideas we want to get input on and discuss.
We've just started 2 days ago so it will take at least until next month before we can release anything. It will be a drop-in replacement to ease migration and upgrade. After that - well, we have big plans of course.
We are growing our engineering team, many are going to join us the coming months (in germany you have a 1 or 2 month notice time so people working at other companies often take some time to join). We are obviously also looking to hire sales, marketing, support and other people a company needs. Some we have or will join soon but more is welcome and if you're interested in a job at a cool open source company, let us know!

RE: NextCloud AMA Feb. 22nd!
The plan is to have Nextcloud (and before, ownCloud...) founder Frank Karlitschek, our security team lead Lukas Reschke and yours truly (just a lowly marketing dude) there to answer any questions you have!
If you want to share some questions here already which we should answer, go ahead!
edit: after thinking, I think this is better: I will create a thread with some background on us, where you can ask questions in advance. I'll do that Monday. OK?
Ofc if you happen to just ignore me and ask here, well... I just might not ignore that

RE: Microsoft to buy LinkedIn for $26.2 billion!
Twitter is full of hilarious comments, btw. Among the best are the ones like this:
EXCLUSIVE: Microsoftβs Satya Nadella accidentally acquired LinkedIn as he tried to delete his account. -
RE: Nextcloud 9 update: security, open source enterprise capabilities & support subscription, iOS app!
Well, then, here's another one: our new Android app v1.1 is out with awesome new features like smart folders for instant upload, a new sidebar, select all in the upload dialog and more. Check it out and share the news!
And yes, the development is led by volunteers. We help and facilitate but essentially, we 'just' unleashed the community members who contributed to the oC app previously and, well, with the inmates running the asylum I must say development is faster and as long as we have enough testers of the beta apps, stability isn't harmed at all. Amazing what an open process does

httpoxy also can affect Nextcloud - so take time to upgrade!
httpoxy can affect your Nextcloud so time for an update. Security matters so take time for this! -
Nc 10 beta comes with 2FA, federation, brute force protection and more...
Sooo, we just released a beta of Nextcloud 10. It introduces some much-asked-for features like 2-factor authentication support and some UI work and improvements to Federation while we made some progress on the enterprise features we promised. Those will all be in the final release, coming in about a month or so.
Until then, this is an awesome thing to play with! Learn more here.

I'm seriously excited to share the news with you all that Nextcloud 11 is released! Some of you have been test driving it already and seen some of the improvements. They are all over, but major areas of improvement include:
- security
- scalability
- full text search
- federation
- better updater
- and much more like:
- kerberos authentication
- UTF16 support on MySQL (emoticons in filenames won't break syncing anymore!)

You're all invited to the Nextcloud Conference 2017 in Berlin ;-)
The Nextcloud Conference starts on August 22 and runs until the 29th. The 26th and 27th we will have a program with talks, workshops and keynotes. The other days we'll be coding, designing, drinking beer, eating bratwurst and so on...
Registration is open, we'll announce a Call for Papers soon. Read the announcement for more details!
I know it isn't exactly next door for everybody but for those living in Europe, at least, it is totally worth a visit. Contributors that need it can also count on some travel support from the Nextcloud business.
BTW in other news:
- Last weekend was the international day of Privacy protection...
- and the Free Software Foundation published a list of challenges to people's control over computing and I blogged about that.
Take care!

want to learn more about ownCloud history.... ?
Heya,
I've been working on a timeline of ownCloud's history. We turned five in the beginning of this year and I thought, well, it'd be nice to have a bit of an overview. Well, that ran a bit out of hand, the page I created became rather massive and I learned far more about CSS than I even thought possible
But it was kind'a fun and I like the end result. Wrote a blog about it, too.
As I can't manage to upload a pic, here's a link to a pic of a part of the whole thing, too
I guess it'd be interesting to for people who want to learn a bit more about ownCloud - and in general, the code is in github so if you ever need to create a timeline with only css and html (no javascript, no sir, me not know javascript, hehe) then check it out. This is a version of the timeline with all the CSS inline, so it is relatively easy to re-create somewhere else.
Have fun and - feedback welcome

ownCloud most secure open source file sync and share - yeah, right...
... according to a blog by our security guy. Yeah, look who's talking, but I think it is, in general, an interesting blog. He attacks the simple view of just looking at the number of security advisories and drawing conclusions from that:
"Many vendors tend to not disclose their security problems which makes them look better if one simply looks at factors such as amounts of the advisories."
and
"If weβd stop putting so much effort into finding and fixing security problems, which would decrease the number of advisories, ownCloud wouldnβt necessarily become more secure."He uses some decent math to make his point and I think this can be informative about other projects, too.
Find his blog here.

RE: Why (A)GPL software is better for your business - give input please!
@JaredBusch I agree, it makes sense to wait and see - we've been telling people that, too. Though I wouldn't wait a full year - a year is a loooooong time in IT. It's been 6 months and no sign of rebound of oC nor any sign of us slowing down...
But sure, wait until Nextcloud 11 is out, I'd say. About one more month and you'll have a number of clear feature improvements to pick reasons to switch from!

RE: ownCloud Android app v1.8 is out!
Awesome. Hope you'll enjoy the improvements, I know I do
BTW ownCloud 8.2 is coming soon, too, less than a month away! Some nice improvements again

@jospoortvliet said in Why (A)GPL software is better for your business - give input please!:
@JaredBusch out of curiosity, what would make you (or customers) switch? Is security a real issue, stuff like this for example?
At this point it is the need for testing.
The problem is that one client has about 400gb of data in their ownCloud over something like 1 million files. I will have to kill replication for this VM in order to use the space currently consumed by the replica to test the upgrade.
Also, I have not seen many examples of people upgrading large instances. I am sure people have done it, but I have not read about it.
My understanding it to go from oc 9 to nc 9 then upgrade to nc 10. This will be very time intensive. Thus, expensive.
As oC 9.0 = Nc 9.0 (with some fixes) you can upgrade directly to Nextcloud 10 (oC 9.1 + some extra features). But, like any upgrade, yeah, you should test and that will indeed cost time.
With regards to big upgrades, a lot of providers have moved over loads of customers and we've migrated a bunch of customers as well but I'll see if we can do something public about that. It feels like insane to do a white paper about it as migration is just a normal upgrade but perhaps it helps convince some people...

ownCloud Repos Changed for 8.2!
Dear #ownCloud users: we have moved our Linux repositories from the Open Build Service to our own download servers. If you were on the stable release channel, you'll have to change the repositories!
You can find details in our upgrade blog or find the new stable repository on our release channels page
Please tell others about this!

RE: Cannot setup Google Drive on NextCloud
Yeah, the only other explanation is that there was a change in the API from Google but I doubt they'd do that without telling people
