But with software RAID in Windows or maybe call it Windows RAID, to the best of my knowledge, I can't configure a hot swap / hot standby disk (or can I?????).

RE: New server q's
Thanks for the info, it's greatly appreciated.
Just so I'm clear, are we saying that software RAID is the RAID function provided by the operating system?
What about the controller configuration programs you can use that come in most servers, when you get told to press CTRL-R to configure etc? They'd be the configuration programs for inbuilt hardware RAID controllers I guess.

RE: New server q's
That's all very interesting.
When I did my training, I got to attend a breakfast meeting with 2 high up tech exec's of Compaq.
They showed us the new 90Mhz Pentium. At the meeting they said that they couldn't see the speed getting much higher as so much heat was generated.
So that fits in with Pete.S's Mhz comment.

RE: New server q's
@scottalanmiller Thanks for all that Scott.
I didn't know Hyper-V was "effectively dead" and I'm not questioning that, but what makes you say that? Curious to now.
I don't have to use Hyper-V but if I don't, this school will stick out like a sore thumb as Hyper-V is used throughout this (Govt) Department.
When I did all my training, we were always told that hardware RAID was much faster than software RAID. That was when we were being taught about x86 server systems such as NT and NetWare, not OSs such as VMS, Unix, OS400 etc.

RE: New server q's
Thanks everyone for the help so far, it's greatly appreciated.
The server is to be used to run Windows Hyper-V VMs up to about 6.
I was hoping to get something around the $AU4000 - $AU6000 range.
I think I'll up the storage to 4TB.
Software RAID. Gee I'm outa touch, that used to be frowned upon. Are we talking software RAID as supplied by Windows OS or is it specialised by the OEM????
I'd like to have 64GB of RAM as well.
How important is the CPU? Would I need a blazingly fast one or something slower but with more cores?
Speed isn't really an issue as it's for a junior school, I guess the work type for the server can be thought of as storage and services, ie: DNS, DHCP etc.
Thanks for any help.

@nadnerB yep, lots of prep stuff before we left.
finally did that trip we were going to do in 2020 in your state of WA. best trip we've ever done. loved every day of it.
did the canning stock route.
took us 21 days to complete the 1800kms. 100 kms in a day was good going.

New server q's
hello.
I've got to spec up a new server for a school.
It really doesn't need to be anything special.
My main question is what RAID level are people using these days & if I chose a server with spinning disks, would I look like an idiot who didn't know anything?
The server will need about 2TB.
A while ago I got help with RAM. One of the kind folks here explained to me that the server I was talking about (at that time) required a certain number of RAM sticks as the address bus was ???? bits wide.
As an example of what I mean, the server had 32GB of RAM and I got that from 2 x 8GB and 1 x 16GB. From memory the advice was I should have used 4 x 8GB sticks.
Can anyone confirm that for me??
Thanks for any & all help.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
gotta love it.
sitting at home the other sunday.
get a text message.
who from, who the f'k knows
it contains 2 things that make me think it may be legit, everything else is a list of numbers and letters and other crap.
word 1, hamilton (i work there sometimes), 2nd word, blob, we know what a blob is.
get to work and I have an email, addressed to someone I know who works at that hamilton job.
in it it says your technician will need to do this n that.no explanation from anyone about anything, no asking if my personal number can be given out. no instruction on how I find instructions on what i'm being asked to do.
i really hate amateurs.

I just got off the phone with a loan agent, and I'm getting a home equity cash out loan for some basic home repairs and (Don Pardo voice)... A BRAND NEW KITCHEN!!!!!!
It is long overdue, the rest of the house is great but the kitchen sucks. And my gf and I cook, she bakes, and we've been making our own gummies... all that takes space we don't have. But not for long. Hoping to get it actually started by the end of the year. Before, during, and after photos will be provided.
Yep, congratulations mate, exciting times. The kitchen is a great place to spend money on your home, it's an investment.

how things change.
years ago I was a contractor for the state police force. one saturday morning we were scheduled to upgrade the chief commissioners desktop pc.
there we were, (had to have 2 of us for on site for security reasons), working away, I was sitting in the chief's seat doing what had to be done, next thing, the door swings open and 2 protective security guys bust in, hands on holstered pistols, "what are you guys doing here" ....
this morning I helped a 7 y.o with log in issues with ABC reading eggs.

Went and got tacos this morning.
Morning tacos? Are they breakfast tacos? What do you put in them?
Yeah, breakfast tacos are the standard breakfast here in Texas. Typically eggs, cheese, potatoes and then either beans for people like me or sausage or bacon for others.
Ooooh, I remember when we visited Houston. Came down from the hotel room one morning, buffet breaky, never eaten so much bacon .....
