The only thing they have now is internet to the Main House (1). I thought copper would be less expensive than fiber since I would only need a $20 circuit protector on it, vs a switch with a SFP if fiber is run. Also with fiber, can't terminate it myself, so that would mean hiring that out, or ordering premade cables at the right lengths.

@DustinB3403 The guy that owns the place will run all the conduit. I vacation there. I'd rather be on vacation than digging a ditch. They will probably only need me to terminate everything and configure it.

Not a significant amount. Just run 1" the entire way. You'll have room for expansion in the future if need be.

$4.21 vs $2.71. You guys are right. On a project this size the difference would be under $100. It would cost way more to have to go back and dig for another run.

haha, 10 will actually have a switch because I need the SFP to convert from fiber to copper.

yes, I plan on running cable.

Sorry, the reason I picked the AC Pro is it has the second ethernet port that I understood was for Ethernet pass through in applications like this. It's not PoE pass though, just ethernet.

@dafyre The distances and cost. Pretty sure I'd be pushing the limit if I ran from 1 to 3 or 4 directly. Also that would mean probably going to 1" conduit so I could get 3 runs of tough wire in it. All said, that would be less expensive than erecting towers to a WISP style solution, so when you compare it to that, the cost doesn't seem so bad.

Yes, switch at AP 6, so 7 and 8 would daisy chain to 9. I would probably be possible to run straight from the Main House to 7 and then go from 7 back to 6 and 5.

Due to the trees we would probably be talking 80' towers before taking the fresnel zone in to consideration.

Here is an image. The drawing is wildy not to scale. From the Main House to Birch is about 600', thus the multi mode fiber. From Lakeshore 1,2,3 to Lakeview is 115'.

UniFi is not designed for this purpose. Could you shoehorn it? Sure. But it is not the design.

So you're thinking have a central unit that services each of the cottages, rather than an AP per cottage.

If I understand @JaredBusch correctly, he is thinking more like a WISP solution where you put a multi point antenna on a mast and then at each cottage have a rocket mounted outside to link with the multi point and then a AC on the inside of the cottage. That was a thought too, but there are trees all over and that adds a lot of gear, which drives up the cost.

I'm looking at doing a wireless project for a group of cottages. Due to the layout, running a homerun cable to each AP isn't practical. To keep the costs down, I was thinking about doing this in each cottage:
Ubiquiti ETH-SP-G2 Surge Suppressor/Protector
PoE injector
UAP-AC-PRO
Ubiquiti ETH-SP-G2 Surge Suppressor/Protector
and on to the next cottage.

This will save on the expense of a switch in each cottage. It will also save on the expense of running home runs. Does anyone see a problem with this? The longest chain would be 3 in a row.

I have a number of clients where they need a server, but Server Essentials on a small server is enough. Veeam for backup and if the box fails, they are down for an hour or two while we restore to something else. The licensing to go to a second AD server would more than double the cost of the project. (and isn't worth it for them)

That's smart thinking if you have an on prem PBX. They can still use the phones even if the DC (and primary DNS) is down.

It's a nice area being so close to the Adirondacks. It doesn't matter if there a 100 good jobs there, you only need one. Bring a bunch of business cards. If you collect them from people, write on the back why you might contact them again. For example if you talk to them and find out they own a MSP as well, you write that on the back, so when you get back you don't contact them thinking they were the VoIP guy you talked to. It's cool to meet colleagues in other parts of the country where you don't want to post stuff publicly, but since you're not competing, you can share numbers with them. It's nice to be able to hand them a card.

Set your out of office reply and someone else cover your phones. It sucks to have to talk time out of a conference to take a call or pound out an email. Your time there is so limited, you need to make the most of it.

Travel light and make sure you have room for swag on the way back.

I think people here are looking for domain wide solutions that protect end users from phishing attacks and the like. You may be able to spot a phishing email, but many end users fail....
